Past Tenses

Past Perfect Continuous

Practice using the past perfect continuous to emphasize the duration of an activity before a past moment.

Form

The past perfect continuous describes an action that had been in progress for a period of time before another moment in the past. It is formed with had been plus the present participle of the main verb (had been working, had been raining), and the form is the same for all subjects. For negatives use had not been (hadn't been), and for questions move had before the subject (Had they been waiting long?). It often emphasizes the duration of the earlier action, frequently with for or since.

When to Use It

  • An ongoing action before another past event, stressing duration: "They had been driving for hours before they stopped."
  • Explaining the cause of a past result: "Her eyes were red because she had been crying."
  • With "for" or "since" to show how long something had continued: "He had been working there since 2010 when the company closed."
  • Describing a repeated or continuous activity leading up to a past point: "We had been practicing all week before the concert."
  • Showing a recently finished activity whose effects were visible: "The ground was wet because it had been raining."

Common Mistakes

  • Forgetting "been": say "she had been studying," not "she had studying."
  • Using the simple past perfect when duration is the point: prefer "he had been running" over "he had run" to stress the ongoing effort.
  • Using stative verbs in the continuous: say "I had known him for years," not "I had been knowing him for years."
  • Mixing up "for" and "since": use "for" with a length of time (for two hours) and "since" with a starting point (since noon).
